Breaking Down The TMUA Format : Section 1 vs Section 2 

TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) is a math admissions test used by some universities in the UK (most notably Cambridge, Durham, LSE, Warwick, etc.) for evaluating the readiness of students wishing to sit for courses based on mathematics such as mathematics itself, economics, computer science, and engineering. 


The TMUA is divided into two tests, assessing different skills. 

Breaking Down the TMUA Format 

Overview: 

● Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes in total 

● Two Sections: 

○ Section 1 – Mathematical Thinking 

○ Section 2 – Mathematical Reasoning 

Each section lasts 75 minutes and contains 20 multiple-choice questions. 


Section 1: Mathematical Thinking 

Focus: 

1. Problem solving ability 

2. Using mathematical knowledge in unfamiliar contexts 

3. Logic, abstractness, and creative reasoning 

Question type: 

1. Unfamiliar or non-routine problems 

2. You may have not encountered such types of questions in your regular school curriculum 3. Usual requiring multiple steps or interpretation of patterns/structures 

Skills being tested: 

1. Lateral thinking 

2. The use of definitions in mathematics 

3. Interpreting an unfamiliar question and applying known techniques to it 

4. Logic and strategy 

Examples: 

● Questions involving number theory, algebraic manipulation, or unusual patterns 

● Problems that are not just "solve for x" but involve insight (e.g., proving something always true or identifying a counterexample)


Section 2: Mathematical Reasoning 

Focus: 

● Pure deductive reasoning and formal logic 

● Evaluating deductive arguments for validity 

● Understanding implications and the structure of proofs 

Question Type: 

● Analysis of arguments 

● Finding mistakes in reasoning 

● Identifying assumptions 

● Evaluating if a statement follows from other statements 

Skills Tested: 

● Formal logic 

● Deductive reasoning 

● Understanding of conditionals ("if...then"), contrapositive, and proof structure 

● Carefully interpreting statements 

Examples: 

● Given a mathematical argument, choose which of the given statements must be true ● Evaluate logical consistency 

● Choose correct conclusions based on premises 


Overall, the TMUA provides a comprehensive assessment of mathematical thinking both creatively and logically. Collectively, both sections provide a great holistic assessment of how ready students may be for mathematically intense undergraduate courses. Being successful in the TMUA requires solid back-ground knowledge, able-to-think flexibly, and being able to reason clearly and rigorously as time is of the essence.
